Thursday 3 – sneak peeks

Posted: 07:26 PM ET

Our weekly glimpse into what's been coming across our desks here at "News To Me." This week we're going to give you a sneak peek into what is coming up on future shows. Without giving too much away of course. Let's just say that these three sites and the people behind them are all scheduled to appear on "News To Me" soon! Some sooner than others!

The Scary City:
This experience was created by the woman behind the Executive Producer of "LonelyGirl15." That viral hit was a low budget flash in the pan compared to "The Scary City." It's a $5.2 million dollar multimedia thrill ride designed to engage, involve and scare the crap out of you!

SixDegrees.org:
This holiday season you can give a gift card... or you can give a GOOD card! SixDegrees.org is a foundation created by a guy you know really well. It's a site that links you to over a million charities worldwide. Through the "Good Card" program sixdegrees.org is enabling you to give the gift of giving. Explore the site today and then meet its founder on "News To Me," Saturday December 20th.

Ideas by Chuck:
Hungry after kicking around the footbag with your friends? Crack open your Hacky Snack! – Tired of brushing? Chew some toothpaste gum! – Hate everything on prime time TV? Maybe an episode of "Chuck Dickens, Illiterate Trucker" will turn you around. Those are all ideas thought up by Chuck. Chuck doesn't have the time, the funds or the energy to turn his ideas into reality... so he's giving them away on his blog! Chuck is going to join us on "News To Me" early next year... that is, if someone hasn't already taken one of his ideas and made him a millionaire!

...so there are three little teases to let you know what were working on for future "News To Me" episodes. See you this weekend!

When it comes to medical news that involves brain surgery, YouTube and a banjo there is only one medical expert to turn to... Dr. Eric Lanford. Actually, he's not a doctor, nor has he played one on TV, but when it comes to diagnosing viral videos there is no one more capable. This weekend Doc L. (as we like to call him) talks to the star of a clip that is getting thousands of hits. His name is Eddie Adcock and the first time we saw him he was playing the banjo while laying on an operating table with a doctor elbow deep in his brain! Scrub in and join Dr. Lanford in the "News To Me" operating room tonight to meet Eddie and his surgeon. Find out how he ended up pickin' and grinnin' and having brain surgery at the same time!

The links to the full video of Eddie's operation and everything else you saw in this weekend's "News To Me" are right here:

5 sites we're watching

Posted: 07:12 PM ET

We're always on the lookout for people making a difference or even just people just making something unique online. Here's a few we have had up on our monitors for the past few days... they MAY end up on a future episode of "News To Me:"

Merry-go-wrong:
News To Me cameraman/editor/writer/producer Teague stumbled on this clip during his daily YouTube rounds. What do you get when you combine a playground merry-go-round, bored teenagers, and a motorcycle? Certain pain.

Hurricane Harmony:
No one is happy that Ike hit, but one man tried to take inspiration from the storm... check out Herbert Midgley and his musical iReport: Ike in East Texas. Our favorite line: "The wind is blowin, the rain is raining, and I'm out here rocking and rollin!"

Adorable puppy head tilt:
Don't you love it when dogs tilt their heads when they hear something they're not familiar with? So darn cute! We'll here's a guy who wrote a whole song for a puppy named Willy that inspires some extreme head tilts. Stay with it till the end, Willy's got skills.

Angry kangaroo:
Honestly, this man in marsupial's clothing is more than just angry, he's kind of a jerk! Blame "News To Me" producer Charles for putting this one on your radar.

Black Cab Sessions:
Our new "News To Me" sucker... I mean intern Corey, found a site called black cab sessions where you can watch acoustic tunes performed by the original artists in the back of a black taxi. Why a taxi? Not sure, but it's cool.

If you have a site we should be surfing let us know!!! Don't forget that we're looking for you to be our location scout AND to give us your 4 word review of last weekend's show!

"Poop in space." "Peeping Tom E.T." "North Pole ice bath." Yes, you could plug those terms into your favorite search engine to find the things you saw on "News To Me" this weekend, but why risk being hyperlinked to something that isn't what you were looking for... or worse... to something that no amount of virtual antiseptic soap will clean from your brain?

Don't risk it! We've got the links to everything you saw on the show right here!

Last week Eric was almost ticketed for jaywalking while shooting "News To Me." This week, we actually let him behind the wheel of a moving car while we shot the show. Thankfully, we managed to make it though this shoot with no police intervention, (though we did take out extra insurance just in case).

Now that we're home from our little North Georgia road trip, we've got to unpack our duffel bags which we FILLED with links to all the places we visited in this weekend's show. Pretend like you work for the TSA, put on some rubber gloves and dig through our link filled luggage on the next page »

Hotlinks for 7/12 & 7/13

If you want more info on anything you see in this weekend's "News To Me," congrats! You are on the right blog!

We must be getting pretty big time because this weekend's show was so loaded with "the goodness" (as opposed to "The Wackness") that we had to bump a couple pieces. In the the news biz when we have to reschedule a previously planned interview or segment for a later date, we say its been "bumped." The two most blatant bumps in this weekend show were our "Caption This" winner from last week, and Henri the Cat.

We emailed Henri's "people" to let them know his segment had been bumped and got this reply, apparently from the cat himself in his native French, "Toujours, la meme chose – souffrir, c'est mon destin." Which according to his translator Will Braden means "It's always the same... suffering is my fate." Our reply, "Traiter avec elle chat!" Which according to Google Translate means, "Deal with it cat!"

As for our giant soccer player "Caption This" winner... you're 3 milliseconds of fame is still coming! As is your t-shirt! In the meantime though we have a NEW "Caption This" up. Get in on that one before the massive throngs of viewers get their first look at it next weekend.

Henri and the winning "Caption This" caption are now scheduled to air starting Saturday 7/19.

The Links for 7/5 and 7/6

Posted: 03:09 PM ET

Happy 4th of July weekend! Hope you survive with all your fingers intact!

While you are "ooohhhing and aaahhhing" over your hometown fireworks display tonight, we are locked in a dark room lit only by the glow of computer monitors and a red white and blue lava lamp obsessing over every frame of video in this weekend's edition of "News To Me." Well... one of us is anyway. Thanks Teague! We'll save you a sparkler and a beer! Unless Charles drinks that one too.

OK... keeping this one kind of short... we know you have a lot of "long weekending" to do and I'm certain reading this blog isn't anywhere near as high on your list as doin' up some steaks and veggies on the grill by the pool. In fact, it's probably not even as high on your list as CLEANING the grill OR the pool...

The links for 6/28 and 6/29

Posted: 04:33 PM ET

Two of us on the "News To Me" team took this last week off. The world of 24/7 news makes it tough to take vacations. As Apu the owner of the Kwik-e-Mart on "The Simpsons" once remarked, "This store is open 24 hours a day. It puts great demands on my time!"

The Headline News "store" also never locks it's doors... so when some of us are M.I.A. the rest of us on "News To Me" have to work a little harder and in some unusual capacities in order to get a show on the air. For example: writers become producers, producers become editors, Eric becomes the coffee boy (cream and two sugars please).

Lucky for us we also have YOU on staff to help pick up the slack... we are overloaded with YOUR videos this weekend. Check out how much stuff came from iReporters in this weekend's show on the next page »

Update-a-palooza

Posted: 04:39 PM ET

Eric kisses the camera

Ian's life is officially for sale. Kyle is trading the Red Paperclip house. How iReport.com made one man's cubicle famous. "The Redneck Mommy" has an ear ache. PLUS...

Those are News To Me's resident EMMY® Award winners in the pic above! Combined, Eric and Teague took home 4 statuettes from the 2008 Southeast Regional EMMY® Awards for their work on "TBS STORY/line" on Saturday Night here in Atlanta. Eric was so thrilled about winning (again!) that he just could not hold back his affection for the camera!

Actually that shot was taken a few hours before the awards were handed out. We were way down yonder on the Chattahoochee River being devoured by invisible biting insects and shooting Eric's parts of the show that will air in two weeks. Our vision for this scene was a black and white, kind of artsy, Fellini-style thing... but it turned into more of a really twisted version of Christopher Walkin's Saturday Night Live character "The Continental." Complete with Eric's creepy and bad French accent. You'll get to see how it all comes together on July 5th and 6th.

But what about Ian and the Red Paperclip house and the cubicle? keep reading »
