Office worker goes berserk.. or not

Posted: 10:36 AM ET

As the Web Producer for "News to Me," I like to think I’m up on "webby stuff" and "viral video." A couple weeks ago, I stumbled across what I thought was insane video of an office worker having a total meltdown. I mean, I’ve seen videos of workers gone postal before, but this one was PRIME. I passed it along to the “News to Me” staff, thinking it might work for the show. After all, I figured... it’s video, it’s viral. Should work, right?

James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie are shown in a scene from the Universal Pictures film "Wanted."

Imagine my surprise (read: embarrassment) a week later, when Coordinating Producer Mike Kane forwarded our team a press release hot off the wire that read:

Music Clip for 'Office Meltdown' Video – Revealed as a Commercial for Film WANTED With Jolie and McAvoy

Turns out, I’d been had! Thankfully, the staff did their research. Check out the video for yourself, and let me know what you think. Would you have known it was a fake, or would you have been fooled right along with me?

Music Clip for 'Office Meltdown' Video – Revealed as a Commercial for Film WANTED With Jolie and McAvoy – Now Most Watched on the Internet

MOSCOW, June 12 /PRNewswire/ - The music video for the song "Wanted, but Free" by the Russian band Delta has become the most watched video on the internet. The clip, based on the sensational video about a "crazed office worker" was revealed to be a commercial for the film WANTED. You Tube listed it this week as the top downloaded video.

Timur Bekmambetov, director of the new film WANTED, posted the music video on his blog, finally linking the video to his latest film release. The video itself earlier broke all records for downloads on the internet and became a news item in its own right around the world when it was thought to be footage taken from a CCTV camera of an office worker on the rampage. The video begins with a man casually walking over to another co-worker's desk. Then the co-worker hits the man over the head with his keyboard, attacks his desk, and smashes up the office, destroying cubicles.

It was revealed that the footage was in fact a "viral video" for the new film WANTED produced by Universal Pictures and featuring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. opening in cinemas 26th June.

"One of the film's main themes is how to escape 'office slavery'" – said Bekmambetov "The success of the video doesn't mean the audience is gullible – it shows that people see themselves in this story. They see the truth – about themselves, about their suppressed desires and their need to break free. The video and the film are kind of therapy – they give you the experience of emotional release without having to smash up an office yourself."

The viral marketing video was developed by Bekmambetov's company BPL-Marketing as part of Universal Pictures campaign for the film in Russia.
